Asphalt repair in Billings, Laurel, Lockwood and across the Yellowstone Valley is a spring ritual for a lot of property owners. Winter opens a crack, water gets under the mat, and by April there is a hole where the driveway used to be. We repair asphalt the way it holds. Cut the failed area back to sound pavement, rebuild the base under it, then patch with hot mix and compact it while it is hot.
Most of what we fix is smaller than a repave. Potholes, alligatored patches, crumbling edges, a soft spot at the garage apron. Catching damage at that size keeps the bill small, which is why crack sealing and seal coating pay for themselves. When the failure has spread past patching, we say so and price new paving instead.

A pothole starts as a crack somebody could have sealed. Water runs through the opening and soaks the gravel base underneath. The temperature drops, that water freezes and swells, and it lifts the pavement off its support. Traffic then punches the unsupported piece down until it breaks loose and the hole opens up.
Billings crosses the freezing line all winter, so the cycle repeats for months instead of happening once. That is why holes here grow fast and come back in the same spot every spring. Fill poured into a soft, wet base is a placeholder. Fixing what is under the asphalt is what makes a repair stay put.
Our patching starts with a saw cut back into sound asphalt, squared up past the damage rather than right at the edge of it. We pull the broken material out, look at what is under it, and rebuild the base if it has gone soft or wet. Hot mix goes in from there, gets raked to grade, and gets compacted in lifts so the patch sits flush with the surface around it.
Square edges and full compaction are what separate a repair that lasts from a shovel of cold mix. Cold patch has a place as a stopgap in January, when the hot plants are shut down and a hole is eating tires. As a repair it ravels out inside a season, and the hole reopens a little bigger than it was.
Some pavement is past patching, and the count of patches tells you. Once a drive or lot is alligatored across most of its area, every new hole is a symptom of a base that has given up everywhere. Patch after patch on a surface like that is just renting time, and the invoices add up to the repave you were avoiding.
At that point we price the alternative: dig out the failed sections and repave them, or lay new asphalt paving over a corrected base. Where the surface still has life in it, we go the other direction and defend it with crack sealing and seal coating. You get the read either way from a free look at the pavement.
