Worden sits in the middle of the Huntley Project. The Bureau of Reclamation opened that irrigation district in 1907 to water this stretch of the Yellowstone Valley. The townsites of Worden, Ballantine and Pompeys Pillar were laid out about six miles apart along the rail line. The ground between them still grows sugar beets, alfalfa and small grains. Property out here is acreage. A long driveway off the county road, a shop or a shed that wants a floor, and a house set back far enough that the approach is a project of its own. Montana Highway 312 runs through town, the Yellowstone River runs just north of it, and exit 14 off Interstate 94 puts Worden a short run from Billings. The Huntley Project schools sit in Worden, which makes a town of a few hundred people the hub for the whole corridor.

In Worden that means concrete driveways and approaches, shop and shed slabs, and asphalt driveway paving for the runs where concrete stops penciling out. Irrigated bottomland holds water, and water under a slab is what a Montana winter turns into a heaved driveway. That makes base work the whole job out here. We dig to material that will compact, build the gravel base up, and set grades that carry runoff away from the concrete instead of letting it pond along the edge. Ditches, laterals and yard irrigation all feed the same problem, so drainage gets planned before the first form goes up.
Approaches take the worst of it. Where a driveway meets a gravel county road, the edge gets truck wheels dropping off it, spring mud and a plow blade at an angle. We form the approach to the road grade and thicken the sections carrying turning loads. Where the old one has broken up past patching, it comes out and gets replaced on rebuilt ground. We do not jack or level settled concrete, in Worden or anywhere else.
This corridor runs on outbuildings. Machine shops, equipment sheds, grain setups and pole barns, most of them wanting a floor that can take a jack stand and a loaded trailer tongue. We pour slabs and pads sized and thickened for that, plus RV pads for the camper that lives beside the shop nine months of the year.
Ballantine sits a few miles back toward Huntley. Pompeys Pillar sits a few miles the other way, just east of the sandstone landmark where William Clark carved his name on July 25, 1806. Both are inside our normal working radius, along with the farms strung between them. Long private lanes out here usually pave better than they pour, and we keep them going afterward with crack sealing, seal coating and asphalt repair where a soft spot shows up.
