Asphalt driveways in Laurel come in two generations. The blocks near downtown were platted when the railroad built the town: small lots, tight setbacks, drives that squeeze past the house and sometimes load from an alley. The newer end runs the other direction. Cherry Hills, Beartooth Pointe Estates and Brookwood are filling in with contemporary homes, and out at Northhill Estates the lots stretch toward an acre along Longview Road, Clarhill Road and Green Bluff. Two different driveway problems, one set of physics underneath: base, drainage, and a mat that can take a Montana winter. The build has to fit the lot, and Laurel lots refuse to match each other.
Ostermiller Construction paves, repaves and converts gravel drives across Laurel, with the estimate done standing on the driveway in question and prices both materials from one visit, so if concrete is in the running, concrete driveways in Laurel is the other half of that comparison. This page covers the blacktop half. The service metro-wide is our asphalt driveway service, and the rest of our Laurel work collects everything else we do in town.

Laurel writes real rules for residential approaches: 12 feet minimum and 30 feet maximum width at the base, at least 5 feet off the side property line, and one driveway per property on frontages of 60 feet or less. New or changed approaches get city review. None of it is difficult, but it has to be designed in from the start, not discovered after the forms are set.
We lay the drive out to fit both the lot and the code. Where a family needs more parking than the approach width allows, the answer is usually a wider pad past the right-of-way line, with the approach kept legal and the extra width put where the rules allow it.
On the original blocks, driveway work is mostly replacement: mats laid decades ago, patched past recognition, squeezed between house and lot line. Tight access is normal for us. We protect the fence and the siding, tie in flush at the garage and the walk, and get a clean mat into a space with no room for sloppiness.
On the newer end and the acre lots, runs get longer and gravel conversions get common. Distance is where blacktop shines, because every added foot costs less than it would in concrete. We proof the existing gravel, fix what will not compact, and crown the mat so a long drive sheds water its whole length.
Laurel sits in Montana's chinook belt, where warm winds off the mountains hit 25 to 50 miles an hour and can flip a freezing week into a puddle season overnight. Cold waves roll through a handful of times each winter, so pavement here gets wet, frozen, thawed and refrozen on repeat. That cycle is exactly what kills unsealed asphalt.
The counterpunch is maintenance on a schedule: crack sealing each fall so melt stays out, and a seal coat every few years before the surface goes gray. We come see the actual job — the slab, the driveway, the lot, and the ground under it. What failed, why it failed, and what the fix really is. No blind quotes over the phone.
You get a free written quote with a real number and a real timeline. It says what's included — tear-out, haul-off, prep, materials — and it holds unless the scope changes.
The crew shows up when we said and does the job the way we quoted it — tear-out, base, forms, pour, pave, seal or stripe. Anything unexpected, you hear about it immediately, not on the invoice.
We walk the finished work together before we call it done. Clean lines, clean site, old material hauled off, and clear guidance on cure times and care. Done means you say it's done.
